USA TODAY BESTSELLER • Perfect for fans of Mary Balogh and Eloisa James, Sharon Cullen’s seductive new historical romance ignites as a shy country girl and a hotheaded duke surrender to dangerous temptations.

Lady Sara Emerson was jolted out of her dull provincial life by her cousin’s murder. Now that the killer seems to be targeting her, Sara seeks help from the man who was once her cousin’s fiancĂ©, Gabriel Ferguson, Duke of Rossmoyne. With his towering frame and fiery personality, Ross cuts an intimidating figure. Living under his protection, however, has its own hazards—like the sudden urge Sara feels to take their relationship in new, exquisitely inappropriate directions.

Dazzled by the social graces of his betrothed, Ross never noticed her shy, blushing cousin. Looking at Sara now, though, he’s drawn to her lovely eyes and calm disposition. Funny how a year away from the hustle and bustle of the ton changes a man. But Ross has no intention of allowing a woman to interfere with his plan to return overseas. He will simply capture the murderer and set sail once again. The problem is, with her beguiling lips and heavenly touch, Sara makes him never want to leave home—or his bed—again.

This book was a struggle to finish. The story line was good and that's about it. I did not like the main female character, found her unbelievable. One minute she was ultra shy and the next she was like a bitch (dog, not a person) in heat. The main male, I found wishy-washy. As far as I am concerned, there was no chemistry between them.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley.

I was hoping to find a new author in the historical section, but this book was really a bust for me.

I thought the characterizations were flat and uninteresting--also more than a bit anachronistic. I know a modern sensibility is part of most historical novels (and I hate that but tend to accept it) but this was beyond what I find enjoyable. I had a difficult time reading the book and ultimately stopped. The writing is pretty basic and the book lacks charm. The characters are lackluster and I frankly didn't believe them.

Anyhow, this seems to appeal to a lot of readers, judging by all the positive reviews, so I think my standards might be out of whack.

This was a poorly executed story with characters who lacked depth and consistency, and wayyyyyyyyyyyy too much 'I'm not good enough' bleating from the heroine, and a hero who had a backbone as resilient as overcooked spaghetti.

The mystery around which this story was built certainly had promise. Unfortunately, the execution of the writing sold it down the river.

One of the very real irritants for me as I slogged on with the reading was the bizarre situation in which the heroine from the word go, calls her aunt and uncle 'mother and father'. Excuse me???? That is just not natural, nor is it particularly healthy. It put me right off the heroine----but sadly, she did a darned sight more to put me off her as the story labored on. She goes from shrinking violet to sexually demanding in the blink of an eye. Professes to get all tongue-tied when she has to converse with the people she's been raised to fit in with - ie: Polite Society, then takes centre stage and delivers an apparently stellar performance in the rookeries of London when trying to elicit information from a hard-boiled inhabitant of the underbelly of London (and in doing so, consigns the willing-to-be-consigned duke/hero to the role of silent bystander).

I didn't like this story - on so many levels - and didn't like the characters in it.

Cannot recommend.
