Excellent and necessary scholarly collection examining the intersection between creative writing and affective disorders

A diverse collection of voices exploring the impact of affective disorders, as a theme and creative force, on the writing process. I found a number of the essays moving, provocative, and quite informative. I also appreciated the creative and scholarly approach of a number of the authors. Although the anthology is by no means definitive, it is part of an important, valuable, and still evolving conversation on how affective disorders shape the production and reception of literary works. Highly recommend not only for scholars of literature and the social sciences, but also for creative writers and those interested in how affective states influence the ways we write and read.

What is the Muse?

Chapter Two, "Muse Afire ..." by Nancer Ballard is worth the price of the book. She asks whether any artist (if given the choice) would accept mental illness as the price of creativity. And she explores the borderline between inspiration and madness. In addition she shapes her whole essay with a marvelous description of the making of murals of the muses in the Boston Public Library.

A Meaningful and Necessary Conversation...

This book is a wonderful collection of voices on the subject of creativity and mental health, on composing from within and as a process of defying stigma. I am biased because I have an essay in the book, but in truth I feel honored to be included among these authors. Thanks to the work of Stephanie Horton (and Marya Hornbacher who provides the introduction), this book provides thoughtful and gorgeous reflections on taboo topics that deserve to be brought to light.
