One of the best Science Fiction stories ever written.

This is the precursor to the Clarke novel "City and the Stars". I originally read this while still in elementary school and it was the first sci-fi I had ever read. No other has ever topped it.
Clarke forms a world in the very distant future whose inhabitants live for hundreds of years on a ravaged planet earth in the oasis of the city. The city is an incredibly advanced utopia but an island of machines and somewhat bored inhabitants.
The main protaganist is the youngest member of the community who ventures out into a voyage of discovery and onto another community which has also survived the ravages of time. The reuniting of the two tribes of mankind each a distinct culture at opposite ends of the spectrum is problem and goal of "Against the Fall of Night".
This is science fiction storytelling at its best. A great story and a must have for all fans of the genre.

A masterpiece preceding The City and The Stars

Arthur C. Clarke's masterpiece The City and The Stars (which I'm glad to note is back in print, which is loooooong overdue), is, in fact, an extended version of this early Clarke masterpiece. The City and The Stars is widely considered one of the greatest science fiction novels ever written, and with good reason. And, although I would agree with Clarke in saying that the later novel is the better of the two, this is a certifiable masterpiece in itself. Most all science fiction is, inevitably, set in the future, but this book is set in the far, far, far future. The world Clarke posits is a logical one, and is great as both a story and a warning. Far from being a dystopia, the city of Diaspar in the book is the genuinely archetypal Utopia. It is into this stagnant, decadent setting that Clarke creates one of his grandest visions. This book is sweeping in its vision and its prose. Clarke has always had a deft poetic touch, and this story contains some of his most beautiful outpourings of words. An absolutely essential read for any science fiction fan, as is the novel that it bequeathed.

Technically Clarke's first novel?

As I understand it, Clarke started plotting this novel out early in WW2 before he volunteered for the RAF. This would then technically make it his earliest novel- even though it didn't get published until 1953 by the legendary Gnome Press (first of the dedicated science fiction publishing houses.)

Clarke would later feel compelled to extensively rewrite this novel and release it under a different title (The City and the Stars.) Personally I prefer this version. The Technology is set over a ten billion years into the future so a mere 50 years or so since it was first published doesn't really "date" it.

This book doesn't share the high degree of hard science fiction detail that you find in most of his books. The technology is so advanced (machines never break down and read your mind to know what you want of them)that it seems more like magic. In fact, there is a statement that there are no more engineers in the world of the future since once the master robots started building themselves- and everything else- they were no longer needed and engineers faded away. I can identify with that, why work a thankless, unappreciated, arduous pursuit like engineering if the machines can do it better?

The cosmic sweep of this novel over vast intervals of time and the entire universe reads more like an Olaf Stapledon novel (a British science fiction author that died in 1950 and whose works Clarke was no doubt familiar with.)

If you like old-fashion space operas about the lost glories of the galactic Empire this book still weaves that classic atmosphere.

Well done textbook for engineering majors. Covers a wide variety of topics, making it great for both introductory levels as well as advanced levels in engineering college years. This can serve as an decent reference guide, too. Also details a lot of historical background regarding engineering, too.

Dont buy unless you have to

I had to buy it for a college class. This book was filled with grammatical and mathematical errors. It even had a few formulas written down wrong. Not much useful knowledge in the book that you wouldnt learn from other engineering classes.

Sample code is in Objective C

Beware! The code in this book is in Objective C. So, if you're just starting out with development, chances are you want a book with code written in Swift.
The book seems to have some nice features to it and the authors discuss interesting topics, however I was discouraged by seeing the choice on programming language given that Swift is the new way to go.

Good start learning iOS Game Development

Also apart from just explaining the technology the book also covers essential skills like AI programming, Physics and Multiplayer game development which are additionally required for game development. The book also touches on OpenGLES and covers in depth 3D texture mapping and animation for anyone trying to make the move from 2D to 3D game development. I heartily recommend this book anyone who are getting into iOS game development.

One of the best purchase of mine so far. I had plenty of doubts before purchasing this book. But the author made it easy to read and follow. Even the complicated stuffs are explained way easier. I can say the author has put lot of efforts in bringing different flavours together here to help us explore more possibilities of using iOS game features in a step by step process. A very handy book I recommend to all.

Loved this book!

My son is in the second grade and I have a very hard time finding books that are challenging yet hold his interest. He found this book and wanted to read it. It has 300+ pages and I was a little worried he would get bored with it. He loved it so much he actually read the thing in a day. He has never been so engrossed in a book! The pages are very colorful and there are small activities spaced throughout the short chapters. He loved following Geronimo through his adventures with ogres, witches, the candy land, etc. It also helped build his confidence given he finished such a long book. We will definately be getting more of these.

Unexpectedly good

We love Geronimo Stilton - my boys just eat this series up. The books are funny and have plots, and the puns and funny situations give us the giggles. We haven't found a dud yet, but even so, this book is a nice surprise.

It is a full-length novel, much bigger than the usual Geronimo Stilton chapter books. 300 pages, and get ready for some great maps and illustrations. Games, codes, and mazes are sprinkled through the book to keep your reader engaged.

The double-page illustrations of each find-the-crystal-key page are very well done indeed.

If you have more than one Geronimo Stilton fan, you might want to buy multiples of this book.

This is hopeless in Kindle form..the text is so small you need a magnifying glass to see it! A huge disappointment given it was the first ebook we purchased for our daughter to read on her new kindle. We didn't bother downloading a free sample because we know the Geronimo books are great, however will definitely do so in future to assess whether any book is satisfactory in kindle form. Sadly this one is not and we have wasted $9.99.

This WMA book gives a well-rounded review of wilderness protocols for readers already familiar with the topic. But it is by no means a complete textbook or reference material. Several commonly encountered illnesses were given less treatment.

Content was easy to read and laid out in a logical order. The most helpful part of the book included special wilderness considerations.

About the Author
Colin Knight was born in Manchester, England to working class parents – his father painted houses and drove delivery trucks; his mother worked in a retirement home. He and his four siblings shared a small three-bedroom house on an unremarkable city owned housing estate ten miles from the city centre. From seven to sixteen years old, he held newspaper and milk delivery jobs, which he did, before school. Educated to state standards, at an experimental public high-school for boys, Colin graduated at sixteen with minimum credentials. At eighteen, he joined an American international company as a general office helper. By twenty-three Colin had developed an aptitude for product management and marketing. His career with the American company provided work assignments in Italy and Switzerland, as well as travel to many European countries. In 1987, Colin immigrated to Canada to work for a distributor of the American company. In 1991, he took a chance and quit work to attend university. By 1997, Colin had obtained a BA Honors Degree in Political Science, and a MA Degree in International Relations. In 1999, after a brief return to the private sector, Colin joined the Canadian Federal Government. During his fifteen-year government career, Colin worked for the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Canadian International Development Agency, the Public Safety Department, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and most recently, he was a Senior Policy Analyst in the Federal Privy Council Office. Government work and assignments took Colin to Europe, Asia, Latin America and the US. Colin retired from the government in 2014 to focus on family, writing and life. Colin lives in Ottawa, Canada with his wife and their three children. In between housework, groceries, shuttling children and general family support, Colin is working on his next novel. Colin Knight is a master at bringing fiction as close as possible to the reader's life

Colin Knight is a master at creating unique atmospheres, seamlessly going from a police interrogation room, to a government office, to various places where his characters live. His intimate knowledge of office life and his ability to discern fundamental dynamics at play allow him to accurately depict some of the worst aspects of Canada’s Public Service. This, added to his detailed description of the Ottawa region, makes the story realistic, which leaves a strong impression when an apparently regular government analyst starts killing his colleagues one at a time.

This novel is as close to a government employee’s day to day reality as fiction can get. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is familiar with the Public Service or office dynamics in general. I am certain it will not leave you indifferent.

In this, his second novel, Knight brings his intimate knowledge of the Canadian Public Service and, in particular, the Intelligence Secretariat into play and paints a suspenseful story of detailed planning and murder. The reader is led through a maze of police interrogation, flashbacks, and thought processes to reach an unexpected conclusion. Hard to put down once started, the reader starts every chapter with the anticipation that the mystery will unravel and the murderer brought to justice. I look forward to his next novel.

even though you know almost from the start who the murderer is you wont be able to turn the pages quick enough to find out if he gets caught. i liked the way the story was told with the "alive" and "dead" sections for each victim. the story moved at a fast pace. I also enjoyed reading about the ins and outs of the Canadian Govt. This author knows his sh*t. I am really looking forward to his next book.

About the Author
Mitchell Chefitz is the author of two novels: The Seventh Telling and The Thirty-Third Hour. He is spiritual leader of Temple if Israel of Greater Miami, a center-city synagogue of 500 households, and founder of the Havurah of South Florida, a network of home study and prayer groups. He lives with his wife in Pinecrest, Florida. They have three adult sons.

The Right Stories

Though one or two of the stories spoke to me most directly, from each I gleaned something of use, a specific validation, or a challenging surprise--the perfect expression of a truth, the sense that in one area or another of my life I was on track, the clear understanding that in other areas I had missed a turn. No judgmentalness in the stories, "just" stories that open the mind, stir the senses and move the heart. The often lyrical and precise prose, of course, contributes to this. I have bought several copies of this priceless collections as gifts and will, no doubt, buy more and re-read my own copy many times over.

A PLEASANT JOURNEY AWAY FROM IT ALL

"The Curse of Blessings" by Mitchell Chefitz is a compact book that

invites its readers to partake of a short journey in which current

tensions are abandoned: Be they such things as wars, health, finance ?

or lack of same; flunking the 13th step of a 12 step plan where an

expensive enrollment costs refund isn't an option; or a thousand point

drop of Dow.

It is a book so well written it proves the premise that sometime the

right story can change your life. Some of the stories can be called

fables. Others can fit the mold of parables sung in the same key many of

us first became familiar with in the Bible where one had to speak truth

in subtle modality to avoid residency in the San Quentin death row of

those times.

The first of the ten stories , "The Curse of Blessing" grips your mind.

and provokes searches for its applications in ones own life -- again and

again. As such, reading and understanding this story is as dangerous as

using a cell phone while driving in rush hour traffic madness on a Friday

afternoon beginning a four-day holiday.

The story entitled "Measure of Success," in addition to teaching you both

the meaning and pronunciation of one of the most important phrases in

world religions, heralds the approach to your life you would expect to

understand after an intense session with a Shaman, Griot of West Africa

or " Ju-Ju" in a cavern in the New Orleans 9th Ward unscathed by

"Katrina."
