The lack of women speakers was its greatest deficit, but there was a women's' event within ...

Another year or so, in the summer of 2017, and it will be the 50th anniversary of the Congress from which this book issued. I was visiting the volume out of historical interest mainly, that is, I wanted to revisit the vicinity time and locale-wise that initiated what has come to be called "the anti-psychiatry movement", and I wanted a peek inside this side-show to that movement (i.e. Congress of The Dialectics of Liberation in 1967 London). I'm giving it four-stars merely because there was no summary included, among these speeches from the event, of The Congress itself. Also, given a few of the speakers and events not included in this volume, edited by David Cooper, I don't think it can even be considered representative of The Congress in its entirety. That said, you get a little of the gist of the event, and its time, with the "main" speakers. The climactic speech would have to, at the time and in the context of time passing, be that of Stokely Carmichael. Without his presence the number of stars given to this volume would start to decline dramatically. The lack of women speakers was its greatest deficit, but there was a women's' event within the event highly critical of the event that didn't make these pages. Go figure. A more fuller picture of the event can be gained by complementing a reading of this book with what exists online pertaining to the Congress.

This is truely the best SMing book I've read

Talk to almost any professsional SM and they will recomend you read this book. It covers every area of the rehearsal process with a notation system beyond any other. Her prompt book layout is extreamly advanced and not needed for smaller theatres but a great thing to know about. The best part of her book is her list of what to do for the entire production process. It lists everything with forms in the appendix to use also. Overall a great book, no matter what leval of stage management you're at.

Brainpower - Excellent Book

For some time now I have been concerned about the state of my memory and ability to focus. I am so glad to have found this book that explains clearly and simply how we use our brains and why we can become forgetful and at times unable to focus properly. The exercises should not be difficult to perform and the section on meditation is free of unnecessary jargon. I found the content useful and interesting and the book so well written that it was a pleasure to read.

was pretty much a decent grab

Do you know someone who somehow intimidates you because he seems to know and remember everything he has read and was taught in school? Well, I do and I do feel envious sometimes because that someone is my husband. This book was very practical introducing practical exercises and techniques to improving memory skills. These strategies were presented in a simple and straightforward way and I do agree to most, if not all. Simply put, this book, although short, was pretty much a decent grab.

I enjoyed reading about the different tips and techniques that you can use to sharpen your memory and use more of your brain capacity. The advice this book gave such as brain games, eating the correct foods and sleeping 8 hours a night will all help you to achieve this. Although this book is relatively short it contains quite a few ideas on what to do and would recommend to anyone as we can all use with gaining brain power more.

One of a Kind

There is so much to say about Notes to an Actor. I have had the absolute pleasure of being one of Ron's students and can say that of the dozens of teachers and professors that I have had and come across, he has been by far the best and most influential. He inspires his students to truly reach for that level of brilliance that is capable of being reached and to live up to one's own talents. I read this book cover to cover and can say it is a very real, tangible, direct approach to the art of acting. The problem with so many acting books is they are so ridiculous in their lofty ideals of what acting is or should be- but that is all they are- ideals. Ron goes for something much more than this. As his friend and colleague Kirk Douglas said- any actor who reads this book will become better because of it. For all actors everywhere- buy this book. read this book. if you have any care or passion for your art, you must.

extraordinary, enlightening, engaging

The simple honesty of this book is what surprised me. And yet Marasco manages to get to the finest details of what makes actors and acting great. There is humor and a matter-of-factness in his writing that makes this book accessible, easy to read, and fascinating on every page. You could just open up and start reading anywhere. (I actually read it all the way through.) But the more time I spend with this book, the more I think it is genius -- not because it is clever, just the opposite. It is truthful to the bone, de-mystifying, and very, very human. A part of me wants to keep it a secret, but I am happy to recommend Notes to an Actor. Highly recommend. To anyone.
