About the Author

Chester Quarles, PhD, is a professor emeritus of Criminal Justice and Homeland Security at the University of Mississippi, Oxford. During his career, he has served as a military policeman, a state policeman, as manager of the Mississippi Crime Laboratory, and later as the director of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics. He also is recognized as a "Certified Protection Professional" by the prestigious American Society for Industrial Security.

Tammy F. Quarles M. Ed. is a Mississippi licensed professional counselor, a national board certified counselor, and a national certified school counselor. She has worked as a counselor for children ages prekindergarten through college. She also has served as a counselor in a variety of school settings, including an inner city, high crime, violent area.

The biography becomes fascinating before reaching the desert campaigns of World War II, benefiting immensely from post-WWII interviews with his World War I comrades who outlived him. When you do reach the desert campaigns you expect to rely heavily on maps to follow the engagements, but the prose of Young's narrative puts you in the action. Young reveals details about Rommel's craftiness in launching attacks (like simultaneous Luftwaffe attacks to destroy minefields) despite being read in advance through Enigma or nagging supply shortages. Rommel displayed many characteristics of Chesty Puller, fearless USMC leader: leading in front; acts of personal courage; appreciation and affinity for enlisted personnel;a gentleman's code of honor. In the film biography, "The Desert Fox" all these characteristics are depicted with sparing details about his involvement in a plot to kill Hitler and his own demise. Desmond Young, again by post-war interviews, gives a lengthier summation of those events. By the end of this engrossing biography other German generals shine like General Fritz Bayerlein and General Speidel. Speidel, probably more guilty in the Hitler plot than Rommel, was able to escape the Gestapo net because of his academic gifts of a graduate degree and philosophical training, something that Rommel did not put much weight in. This biography illuminates this remarkable general,infantryman at heart, who escapes the infamy of the Nazi atrocities because of his personal code of honor and bravery. His notable contemporaries' accounts are mentioned that can only be worthwhile to any military historian as well. Rommel, no backroom general here, is merely courageous, invincible and resilient, not to be forgotten.

About the Author

Anne Newlands worked for twenty-seven years as an educator and researcher-writer at the National Gallery of Canada. She is the author of numerous books including Canadian Paintings, Prints and Drawings, Canadian Art: From Its Beginnings to 2000, Clarence Gagnon: An Introduction to His Life and Art, Emily Carr: An Introduction to Her Life and Art, and The Group of Seven and Tom Thomson: An Introduction. She is currently writing a book about the Quebec textile artist Mariette Rousseau-Vermette (1926-2006).

Introduction

In the 125 years since Clarence Gagnon was born in a little village north of Montreal, the appeal of his peaceful paintings of rural Quebec has endured, conjuring affection for the old traditions and visual splendour of the Laurentians and the Charlevoix region of eastern Quebec. Best known for his images of sun-filled winter landscapes and the colourful illustrations for Louis Hémon's novel, Maria Chapdelaine, Gagnon was also an award-winning printmaker, whose fascination with technical perfection and craftsmanship inspired experiments in printmaking and led him later to mix his own paints. A complex and multi-talented individual, Gagnon's varied interests, skills and passions frequently competed with the time for his art. As a passionate outdoorsman and a bon vivant, he filled his photo albums with images of fishing, skiing, hiking and sailing that all reflected his intense enthusiasm for nature. Despite the many years of living abroad, his love of the picturesque villages! and dramatic landscapes of the Charlevoix region fostered his interest in the domestic arts of the habitants. These people were descendants of French peasant farmers, and their geographical isolation perpetuated their adherence to traditions largely untouched by industrialization. Gagnon's friendship with them led to his active promotion of Quebec handicrafts, along with his contribution of designs and colour schemes to improve the quality of local products. "All art is fine art," he wrote, "and no art worthy of the name can lose caste by assisting the other arts."

His involvement in the 1920s with Eric Brown, Director of the National Gallery of Canada, and his association with some of the Group of Seven artists, enhanced his pride in his French-Canadian identity and reinforced the contributions of fellow Quebec artists to the story of Canadian art. Gagnon's astute observations of the life, art and politics that surrounded him are recorded in his abundant correspondence, giving us insights -- in both English and French -- into his personality and preparing us for the burst of eloquent speeches delivered later in life. Characterized by his friend the poet Duncan Campbell Scott as "an intense and untiring craftsman in whatever he undertook," Gagnon's concentrated "thoroughness" was balanced, as many others have also noted, by a spirit of optimism that similarly illuminated his art.

Glad to have this collection of Gagnon's paintings and the commentary is good. Quality of the prints is a bit lacking, at least in this paperback version. Gagnon's colors are so vivid, and here they're a little washed out.

Liam loves his life as a linguist and trader on the Rownt homeworld, but he has ignored his heart and sexual needs for years. Ondry may not understand humans, but he recognizes a wounded soul, and his need to protect Liam is quickly outpacing his common sense. They may have laws, culture, and incompatible genitalia in their way, but Ondry knows that he can find a way to overcome all that if he can just overcome the ghosts of Liam's past. Only then can he take possession of a man he has grown to love.

Opposites attract and the steam rises from all the heat

This is a most surprising title. I thought it would be romance, but the relationship is too complicated to call it that. Ondry and Liam are friends and competitors and family and coworkers and finally lovers. They show how love and trust can overcome fear and differing languages and cultural confusion. Having moved from my own culture into a new one, I am at comfort in Liam's skin. He is someone I would have much to share with were he real. So watching all his pain revealed and watching him find a safe home and a man (alien) to love him felt amazingly good. I read the book and immediately started to read it once more. It is a great favorite.

The problem with this book is that we get cheated out of most of the story. A book consists of rising action, climax and resolution. This book skips the rising action and starts us at the climax. This wouldn't be so frustrating if I didn't like the book that we did get as much as I did.

The work that Lyn Gala puts into creating the Rownt is nothing short of brilliant. You really get the sense these aliens are as real and have as rich a cultural heritage as human beings.

But we missed out on so much.

I would have liked to have seen, at least in flashbacks, Liam and Ondry getting to know each other. I would have loved to have seen more of Liam struggling with his place in the military. I would have enjoyed seeing more of the supporting cast.

It's just a shame that the author put so much work into the world and neglected her story.

Oh you know this is going to be a great story! I expected a story between an human linguist, Liam and a Rownt alien, Ondry, Adding in some hot sex with maybe a tentacle of two.

Based on the blurb and the author's note, my expectations for this story were surpassed into subspace. The author did a wonderful job with creating an excellent Dom. Thinking back on some BDSM horror stories I've read in the recent past, Ondry, the story's Dom had a lot of the qualities I love reading in a character. He was attentive, dominant without coming across as a jerk with power.

For this novella, the range of emotions portrayed was spot on. Poor Liam, I wanted to hug him for all the strife he has been through. It made him such a deliciously flawed character (my favorite!) Liam has ignored his submissive side for many years after being abused and neglected and the care that Ondry shows while not fulling understanding the human concept of rape and prostitution, it was a great aspect of the story.

Imagining a society where that type of pain doesn't happen does feel like a fantasy world. I love the Rownt and their...alien ways. The matriarchal society with grandmothers being in charge? I adored it. It's great reading MM where the women are not made to be bitches.

The length? It is satisfying with enough back story.

Would I read more from this author? Hell yes. This is my second Lyn Gala book of the year and it most certainly will not be my last. She writes such quality characters that leave you reflecting on them for hours on end.

The plot? Damaged, submissive ex-rent boy finds a Dom man enough (or this case, alien) to handle him. It's just with a futuristic twist. Lyn Gala breathed a unique breath of life into this tried and true plot. What I also enjoyed that this story was not just about sex, certain aspects make it physically impossible for a Rownt and human to have sex. (Read on to see how these two get past it. You might be pleasantly stimulated.)

This is a definite FOUR & A HALF STAR read. Lyn Gala, I've got my reader's eye on you. I love your style.
