Dazzling control of language

These are stories of real-life love and relationships (ie: imperfect, strange and unexpected - not cheesy or sappy at all). Paley drops the reader into the heart of the character and creates for us a world so vivid, yet so different from what we know, that I felt dizzy the first time I read one of these stories. Her use of language is so perfect it makes me laugh out loud (on the subway) and I enjoy reading any given paragraph over several times. I use this book for inspiration every time I try (in vain) to write something creative myself... check it out!

Utterly Humane; Stylistic Economy

What makes Paley worth reading and important is her language, which is plain, simple english, but the order in which she places the words create sentences that burst with gut-life. Her sentences are like clever, immigrant hands--hard-won wisdom with an untiring lust for life. Most of the stories are set in a New York reminiscent of The Honeymooners, unfortunately due to my age my only point of reference. But ultimately, as the subtitle says, these are clear, gritty stories of men and women at love. This is writing that your mother would understand; and make you glad to be alive.

While no one in their right mind advocates the "test and tell approach," ascribing a level of omniscience reserved only for deity, still tests and measurements can yield a lot of useful data. An amazing draping class

Buy it. I know that will cost you more than $90, but it really worth the money. It is an amazing draping class - even for me, a begginner drapist. The book has a lot of easy to follow illustrations, so it makes the patterns construction a piece of cake. And avoids all of that measuring, tracing on paper, transfer to fabric.. Have fun! ;)

My new fashion bible

I have been sewing garments for a long time now, but always with the normal paper patterns that you can draft yourself or buy online or in sewing magazines. But through project runway, I got interested in the use of draping techniques, especially when you want to design you own clothes. I'm not saying that this can't be done with a paper pattern, but on the dress form you instantly see if a design is good or bad. So, I wanted to learn how to drape. If they gave draping classes in my part of the world I would have taken one, but seeing how they don't I have to teach myself. So I started looking for a good book that would teach me the basics of draping but would also grow further with me to intermediate and - hopefully - advanced skill level. And this book does just exactly that. It starts out very simple, with materials and tools and give you an overview of different sewing terms. After that you start with the basics. A bodice, a skirt, pants. Al this is done with very clear step by step instructions that are very easy to follow. After the basics you start with some intermediate skill projects. She even has a whole chapter on certain materials like knits, which are a bit tricky to sew, if you don't know how. Also on collars, ruffles, casual and formal dress designs... the list is endless. The book ends with advanced designs, like the cowl (which I've wanted to learn how to make for ages now), jackets, collars, the casual and formal dresses and fitting methods. I was a little bit hesitant about buying because of the price. But I know that it will take me years to try out every single design in this book, so I believe the price was well worth it. Oh yes, you will need a dress form for this.

Thank you in sharing this incredible book. I look forward to using it's timely information on my current project and future on as well. Your book arrived on time and in excellent condition. I was not worried about the small marks on the book cover. Thank you for the consideration of the matter. I have been teaching my niece how to sew, we will enjoy this book's information tremendously. :)

Concise and straight to the point book

I must say that I have read many books in the discrete-event simulation (DES) theory and practice and I am experienced in the topic. This book covers all of the DES issues and relates them with ProModel capabilities. The software is really easy to use for modelling real world production and service systems. The book will be useful not only to DES beginners but also to experienced DES modellers.

I rated book with four stars because of the discrepancy between the information regarding examples in the Lab section and their ProModel models (such as interarrival and service times). I hope that the following edition would be less erroneous.
