So seldom are works truly innovative, as David Parkland has achieved in his delightful story Demon Bound. A tale of morality reminiscent of Grimm's Fairytales of 1812, this book teaches honesty and loyalty by contrast of consequence — pairing commendable historical accuracy beside a whimsical and fantastical fantasy tale with strong appeal to groups ranging from Middle Grade, to Young Adult, and indeed through Adult as well.

David Parkland also holds impressive command of theme, setting, voice, and plot, culminating in a very intelligent and shocking climax.

I very much loved this book, and you will as well!

Highly recommended - a great story.

I was recommended this book in a book group, and was gripped as soon as I started reading. Imaginative, entertaining, wonderfully-written, it's a real page-turner. I enjoyed reading it immensely. I am looking forward to the next in the series.

The Knights of St. John of the Hospital were a crusading order who are mentioned in the background of "The Maltese Falcon." But they served as much more than the set up for a Dashiel Hammett mystery. Nursing, however, was not their greatest contribution. After the collapse of the Crusading movement, they became Europe's Mediterranean bulwark against Turkish expansion.
When they were expelled from the Holy Land, they set up on the island of Rhodes, and weathered two concerted efforts by the Turks to dislodge them from the island.This, then is the story of those two campaigns, and it describes them in all their gallantry and savagery.
They finally succumbed to the might of the Turkish Empire, but were able to retire from Rhodes in good order. After being dislodged from Rhodes, the Knights moved to Malta, and there withstood another epic seige which served as the prelude to the decisive Battle of Lepanto. Their efforts truly helped to save Europe from Turkish domination. All in all, this is an entertaining and informative history of a pivotal period in European history.

Read before you visit the island . As you stroll the medieval walled city you will find yourself thinking of the last Europeans to defend Christendom this close to Asia. It was the Turk who came here in the two sieges described. The Knights of St. John were deposed during the second siege and were allowed to leave, eventually reestablishing the Hospitallers in Malta. Gene Thompson was a novelist and writer of radio and television shows. Along with Murder Mystery he was known for Lupe, about a Mexican boy involved with the occult. A native of San Francisco, he graduated from the University of California at Berkeley, after which he worked and studied in Europe for some time. Subsequently, he and his wife, also a writer, moved to Malibu with their four children and lived there for the next sixteen years. He died in his Los Angeles home of cancer in 2001.

Worth looking for

I enjoyed this mystery. Like the previous reviewer mentioned, there is a nice twist at the end. I understand the book is out of print. It was published in 1980, and the dialog is somewhat dated. One character says "you're trying to freak me out"! But I liked the main characters, and there aren't many curse words. Try it, you'll like it!

Fun Mystery

This was a fun read. It was a good mystery, keeping you guessing to the end, and Thompson has an entertaining style, including little anecdotes and jokes along the way. He write mysteries for people who like puzzles. I'm looking forward to reading more by him.

Nice read

This is the new edition of the first version published in 1980 and still an entertaining read.
The setting is a bit old, and could maybe do with a new updated version, but it was such a sweet old-school who-dun-it that I loved it for its oldtime quirkiness.

I'm torn between 3 and 4 and a half stars.
The way the author writes really liked, I found it engaging and sliding.
The only flaws are, in my opinion, the book is a bit too short, the final, where does all the yearning, is a bit too fast, and finally, I find that the novel is lacking in other key characters....in other words is a bit simple.
I think the author has very wide potential for P & P write some nice variation.

Good, but could have been better.

I enjoyed parts of this book. I feel like a part of it was missing. Overall it was a pretty good book. Decent idea for a variation. It lacked some of Elizabeth's strength that I love so much. Caroline needed put in her place. I have to agree with other reviews, the ending left me wanting more. Far to rushed/abrupt ending for me.

About the Author
Norman Unrau is a Professor at California State University, Los Angeles, in the Division of Curriculum and Instruction, where he teaches a course to beginning teachers that addresses literacy and learning in content classrooms. He also serves as Coordinator of the MA in Education with a focus on middle and high school curriculum and instruction and facilitates MA candidates' pursuit of certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. He served as editor of the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, a publication of the International Reading Association for educators interested in the development of students' reading and writing. For several years he served as a University Coach to develop literacy and learning in a large urban middle school in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
